Our innovative Vegan Silk delivers the best of two worlds. Not only does our luxury fabric feel amazingwhen you use it, but you can also feel good knowing that it caused minimum harm to the planetwhen it was produced and that it will leave only the slightest trace when it reaches the end of its lifecycle.
niLuu’s PETA-approved Vegan Silk means no silkworms are killed, and absolutely no animal proteins are used in our production process. To create traditional silk, over 1,000 silkworms are boiled to produce enough yarn for a single pillowcase.Additionally, and you might not even know it, materials such as bone marrow and egg yolk are used in traditional industrial fabric softeners, even for cotton fabrics.
Clearly, Vegan Silk is not literally silk. In most of our products, it is 100% Cupro, a fiber derived from a previously discarded by-product of the cotton harvest: the seeds. In some cases, such as with our pillowcases, we mix Cupro with ECOVERO Viscose. As with traditional Silk, both Cupro and Viscose fibers are incredibly long and thin, allowing for that unique soft and luxurious feeling.
Not only are our fabrics silky without being slippery, anti-static, and easy to care for, they also have benefits for your skin.
The breathable fabric helps maintain your body temperature, keeping you cool in the summer and warm in the winter. Excellent moisture controlmeans our Vegan fabric doesn’t dry out your skin or hair in the ways that cotton, and cotton-blends would.
And to top it off, as it doesn’t cause the same friction that pulls on your skin and causes wrinkles, our Vegan silk additionally has anti-aging benefits.
Soft and comfortable, niLuu’s innovative collection comes in a variety of deep and vibrant colors, and with a soft-brushed finish typical of premium sand-washed silk. All the traditional benefits and with added weight to the fabric: that’s what makes our Vegan Silk like nothing else.
You’ll feel the difference, and it’ll be love at first sight.
Traditionally, fabrics both in luxury and mainstream fashion are made with materials and techniques that were developed before global concerns for sustainability, health, and animal welfare entered our consciousness. But these fabrics continue to be used on a daily basis, and those materials commonly used for our clothes and our bedsheets fail to deliver on at least one of these aspects! Cotton production consumes a disproportionate amount of water, fertilizers, and pesticides; silk raises concerns regarding the ethics of animal welfare; petroleum-based synthetic fabrics, representing around 60% of the world’s textile production, put a significant strain on our planet particularly with respect to their disposal; and wool again raises concerns regarding animal welfare and sustainability.
Our supplier was the first textile company to obtain a EU Vegan Certification for the fabrics we use, in recognition of their work in removing animal proteins from the entire production process.
The viscose mixed in our pillowcase fabric is also biodegradable. We use ECOVERO fibers that have been certified with the EU Ecolabel, ensuring they continually meet high environmental standards from raw material extraction (from sustainable forestry) to production, distribution, and disposal. The manufacturing of ECOVERO fibers generates up to 50% lower emissions and water impact compared to generic Viscose fabrics. And for the sleep mask filler, we use polyester from recycled plastic bottles, to maintain what we feel is the best possible balance of comfort and sustainability available at this point in time.
Sustainable, requiring less detergent and water for cleaning and even holding on to less detergent residue, niLuu’s Vegan Silk products invite you to sleep soundly with a good conscience, every night.
